Barbara Fiechtl is currently the program director of the Early Childhood Alternative Teacher Preparation program. This program works with Bachelor level professionals who are taking coursework to complete a license to teach preschoolers with disabilities. The program offers coursework online and is available throughout the state to all school districts.
She formerly studied the feasibility of virtual home visits with Sue Olsen, reviewing how well technology works and if early intervention services can be delivered effectively to families via internet video conferencing. The project was conducted in northern Utah, and roughly half of the families in the study are from rural areas. Currently, she is a membeer of the Stae Leadership Team for the Utah State Board of Education Reaching Potential through Recpmmended Practices (RP2) initiative which oversees training on the DEC recommended practices for participating district preschool teachers throughout Utah. Using the materials in this in this training, she has an Integrated Outreach Training Initiative (IOTI) grant to train community day care providers in Utah.
She continues to participate in the URLEND program as a faculty representative in special education for 18 years. URLEND is a multi-state collaborative program with the University of Utah Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics; the CPD; the Utah Department of Health’s Children with Special Health Care Needs Bureau; Primary Children's Medical Center; Family Voices organizations in the participating states, and CSHCN programs in Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, and Utah. Through URLEND, Fiechtl mentors two trainees on their leadership projects.
Her research is published in Infants and Young Children and the Rural Special Education Quarterly.
